Febr 21, 2013: Nena Braathen, Sechelt, B.C., Canada
Greetings to all in
Haugesund: My name is Nena Braathen from Sechelt, B.C., Canada. I have never
been to Haugesund but I am planning a trip to Norway this summer and hope to do
so.
My great-great Grandparents
were born in Haugesund as well as their "14 children".
The parents names were:
Reinert A. Jorgensen (a school teacher) and Caroline Nilsdatter. They were
married at Herrods Sogn Sept. 19, 1844 by the Pastor Bugge.
He also Baptized their many
children.
Reinert Jorgensen died
and Caroline with two of her children emigrated from Norway in 1871 to the US.
The elder sons were already living in Minnesota and wished for
their mother to join them.
I suppose I am curious if I
have any family connections still in Haugesund.
I would be interested
to hear from anyone who has the time to connect with me.
Meanwhile "hilsen"
and greetings from the West Coast of Canada.

Hello!
Can anyone
inform me of the name of an orphanage (from the 1800’s) which was located in
Haugesund? From what I have found, my great grandfather worked there in
the late 1890’s possibly. His name was Andreas Hell Ervik
(Hillervick). He may have been a minister, he was trained as a deacon in
Oslo. I cannot find any history of an orphanage in Haugesund.
Someday I’ll get over there to visit all my distant cousins in Holmestrand!!
Thanks!

Hello - My grandfather Lauritz Knutsen immigrated to the
USA around 1880 and ended up in the mining area of upper peninsula of
Michigan. He, and my ancestors going
back to at least 1542 came from Karmoy.
I have visited once and I am interested in anything historical about
Karmoy from WWII era to the Viking era.

Hei Eirik!
Må vel begynne med, GODT NYTTÅR!! So, it looks like it has been 15 years since you started this, how time
flies !! I Remember well the joy we felt when your website came about and we got to
see pictures from our “old” homeland and region ! Since those first days we have
been blessed all along with superb information as to what is happening locally
and around haugalandet . Now and then we got to see someone we knew from the
time we lived in Førresfjorden, and that brought this website closer to home
!
I can not THANK YOU enough for all the work you have done for us
“utvandrerar”!! Thank you also for showing us around our old home town
Haugesund when we were there as a family group !
I realize you are very busy with your job, we appreciate the time you do
spend for our pleasure !

I am trying to trace two women
called Bjorg and Randi originally from Haugesund who worked in London in 68/69 . I
visited them in Haugesund in the summer of 1969 with three friends ,Pete, Jim
and Philip. We spent some time at their family’s lovely summer house by the sea
gorging on fish , frying sausages over open fire and rowing on the fjord, a
great time. Would like to make contact again ,please get in touch if possible:
Extra Dec 10: I cannot remember their surname but they
worked in London in 68/69 (as au pairs ) ,they were close friends , probably borne between 1948
-1950. Bjorg’s family had a summer house by the sea outside Haugesund I
enclose two pictures ,one of each, taken in 1969 (Ask for pictures to eirik@hec.no ) .
I think they spent some time in Oslo after returning to Norway
Autors notice Jan 5, 2011: Bjørg and Randi are now found and are in contact with Jan Didrichsen

Gjerne to
her, men ikke påtrengende.

I am looking for Willy and Wenche Pedersen. Lately I found a postcard from them. On the card was
written that they had moved from Holmegt-2 to Austmannaveien 4c. Around 1977 I was in Haugesund with a ship called
Fosserina. We (Menno de Kroon and Floris Roell) have had much fun
with them. For anyone who read this and knows the family Pedersen as
well follows some details which can help to recognize. At that time Willy had a job at the shipyard. The had two
children. Morton and a girl named ?. The daughter was born 21-3-1978.
They will be about 58 ears old. I hope that somebody can tell me something about them.

July 09: Valerie Reynolds, Texas, USA
Hallo from Central Texas, USA!!
Just touching base regarding my previous message [see below] that I had
posted 1.5 yrs. ago. Still searching for information on my great grandfather,
Karl/Carl Olsen/Olson. Possibly came from the Tysvaer, Haugesund area. Not
absolutely positive on that, but contact with a researcher/friend in Bergen
[Lillian... please contact me if you find this message! Please!] shows a family
from the Tysvaer bygedeboks that may be my grandfather's family. I have copies
of my grandfather's death certificate, and his marriage certificates, but none
of them give birthplace information except for naming Norway as country of
birth. Have also found out recently from my grandmother that she remembered her
father telling her once that one of his cousins was a secretary to King Haakon
[sp?] during the early 1900's. Of course she had no name that she could
remember. But I thought it was an interesting clue. I would greatly appreciate
any information from anyone who knows something on this family. I don't want to
intrude on any possible family members, and I don't want anything from anyone,
other than to know that I have been able to find my grandfather's family and to
maybe learn more about his early years. I can still be contacted at either of
these addresses: reynoldsv_5663@hotmail.com or txreyn5663@earthlink.net
Thank you most sincerely,

(name was found on Karl's application for a Social Security #). Had a contact in
Norway, Lillian K., [haven't heard from her in a long time - Lillian you out
there??] who had been trying to help locate Karl's ancestors through bygdeboks
that she borrowed, and thought she may have found them... not absolutely
positive, but looked promising: Knut Olsen Hundsnes b. 1833; d. 1892; married to
Synnove Sigvesdtr Hundsnes b. 1840 (daughter of Sigve Sjursen Hundsnes and
Synnove Torbjornsdtr Nedrebo). This family was in the Haugesund area, possibly
in Tysvær for a while. Karl came to the US [may have left Norway from the port
of Stavanger>Hamburg, Germany>USA] at about the age of 12, possibly in
1892 sometime. Went to live with relatives, but we don't have their
names--According to my grandmother, an only child, Karl only referred to his
relatives as "Aunt" or "Uncle" in Des Moines (Iowa). Have found no trace of him
in Des Moines, but he did live in Webster City, Iowa. Found that he was married
to a Millie Olsen/Olson [born about 1882 in Iowa - Her parents were both born in
Norway, but I don't have their names] on 13 Sept 1902 in Webster City, Iowa;
Testimony given by a J. P. Olsen/Olson..don't know if this is a relative of
Karl's or Millie's. Karl also lived in South Dakota, and later went West to
Oregon, where he remarried in 1920. He died 5 May 1956 in Warrenton, Clatsop
County, Oregon. If any of this is slightly familiar to anyone, please contact

June 05: Neil Fjeldheim, 11860 Carmel Drive, Lakewood, CO, USA
Hello, My grandparents
emigrated from Haugesund area in the period of 1910-1915, plus several
siblings. Some day I'm coming back as the country looks so familiar even though
I've never been... Mountains and sea, the best of both. My grandparents have
long since passed away, but I believe there are still relatives in the area and
the farm still exists.
Facts added June 11: My
grandfather, Bernt Fjeldheim, was the oldest son of Omund
Fjeldheim and Ingeleiv Larsdatter Kalveland. Bernt was born on
October 17, 1889. Immigration records indicate the home town was
Skjold. Other childern included Brynhild, Ragnhild, Lars, Kari, Endre,
Emelie, Randi, and Omund. Bernt, Ragnhild, and Brynhild arrived in New
York on February 19, 1908. Randi, Endre and Omund immigrated
later. I believe the family still owns the farm that all were born on.
My
grandmother, Elizabeth Solheim, was born January 31, 1889 in Skaare. She
arrived in New York on April 29, 1910. Her brother (I think), Lars O.
Solheim immigrated with Bernt, Ragnhild and Brynhild. I know
very little of my grandmother's family. I believe she had several sisters
that remained in Norway.
Best
wishes, Neil.Fjeldheim@cufund.org

Hei!
Knut Jobsen i Haugesund.

Haugesund,
haugesunder!
Varme hilsner fra Runa Adelsten Jensen

I am looking for any family. My name is Diette
Lynn Raadlund (now Vrooman) born in Santa Monica California USA 5 May 1947. My
father, Willie Egil Raadlund was born in Oslo July 1906, his father was Arnold
and his mother Synnova Waage. He had a sister Ruth (married to Martin Elefson),
Bertrum and another brother whom I'm not clear on his name. My grandfather was
in the fishing business in Stavanger. My fathers brothers were in the Navy and
one a government lawyer, I believe. My father passed in 1956 when I was a young
girl and I have lost all connections with any Norwegian family members. I would
love to have any information regarding my family. I was christened in Trondheim
at the old cathedral in 1947. Please help me if you can.
I have been married to John "Clyde" Vrooman, an

Greetings! I have family in
Haugesund, (Hei! Liv & Ivar!), as well as Vaurhaug, and Mandal. I visited
these relatives for the first time in Sept. of this year (2006), and I fell in
love with this region of Norway. It is very much like
northwestern Washington State where I grew up, in Seattle and the San Juan
Islands
My fathers’ family, the Torgesen
side comes from Risor, but his mother came from Mandal. It was a lifelong dream
to travel to Norway and meet my Norwegian cousins,
that dream has been fulfilled and I can’t wait for my next
visit!

I should like to get in touch with Arne Lomeland,
whom I met in 1957 whilst visiting Haugesund with the British Navy. At that time
Arne was a member of the Boy Scout Movement. He kindly invited me home to a

It is many years since that time, buy perhaps someone may know of him would be able to put me in touch with him.

in 1891. Her brothers were Wilhelm Andreas Emil, Karl Ludwig, and

Hello, I live in U.K. and recently purchased two books of postcards from
America.
I discovered, when they arrived, that they were all addressed to members of
the BLOM family. Half of the postcards were posted from Haugesund to Brooklyn,
New York, between 1906 and 1910.
The cards show Haugesund at that time. There was an ANTON BLOM and a BENJAMIN BLOM. I wonder if any of their
descendants still live in Haugesund.

via Færgekroen i Tivoli. Alt sammen veldig koselig... Men hva kan måle seg med
17. mai i Haugesund?
HA EN GOD DAG!
Mange patriotiske hilsener fra Runa A. Jensen

Haugesund. For that matter, I know very little about my great grandparents.
Could you please tell me if Vikse is a common last name in Norway? Or is it
rare & is there any connection to the place called Vikse and people with
the last name Vikse? Any information would be greatly
appreciated!

We are writing to say how much we enjoyed our
recent trip to Haugesund (along with visits to Oslo and Bergen). It is a
lovely, small town, with warm and friendly people. Our stay at the Best
Western Neptun Hotel was especially pleasant, great service, very good
breakfast. We are also grateful for the warm reception by our Gjerde
cousins of Mosterhamn and Thuestad cousins of Karmoy, which we met for the very
first time.
The good times spent together were very special to
us and will long be remembered. We also thank Eric of this site for putting us
in touch with Hans Gangsto who researched the family for us.
Meeting Hans and his wife Kirsten was great. We knew Norway was a beautiful
country but to visit in person, and experience the loving
kindness of family, really reinforced that fact and we look forward to coming
back.

To whom it may concern:
I live in Canada and am
searching for any family members from Norway. My father passed away several
years ago but told us before he died that the last name we are using is not our
last name. When my great grand father came to Canada he could not speak english
so on the papers he put the family name of the farm which at the time was Waage.
My father told us this and that our last name should be Bernardsen not Waage.
Most of my fathers family have since pasted on and I am not sure as to whom we
are looking for but in any case we would like to fill our family history. I
remember my grandfather was named Gunwald but he was born in Canada and I do
not have my great grandfathers first name. if anyone out there has any info,

Norway. We have been trying to locate our family in
Norway for many months, if you knew any of the Sorhus family, please contract
us. We got out of touch about 40 years ago, with Mabel's last visit to
Norway.
Our branch of the family came to America about
1890's. Thank you! God bless us all!

Nov 18: Emma Kelly, Liverpool, England
Hi I am interested in finding out about one of my ancestors who
came originally from Haugesund. His name was Gustav Lindo and he left
Haugesund and settled in Liverpool at the end of the C19th beguinning of 20th
century. I believe the family went back to Norway for a short while before
WW1, but then came back to Liverpool.
I am particularly interested in
learning about the surname 'Lindo'. I can't seem to find out where it comes
from, what it means etc. Any ideas??
Thanks Emma Kelly

Hello, I am looking for my father, Arne Magnussen or Magnus or Manus (not sure
about spelling.) He is from Haugesund, Norway and has a sister living in the
U.S. named Elsa Knutsen (married to a Val Knutsen.)
Arne visited Detroit, Michigan in 1967 to 1968 where he worked for Val
Knutsen. Elsa is my aunt and I am trying to locate her as well as my father,
Arne Magnus(sen.) I have been told that I look exactly like my aunt Elsa by
people who have met her. She is probably in New Jersey, Michigan, or
Florida.
Arne returned home to Norway sometime in 1968 and still lives there. There
will be a reward offered for information that leads to the location of Arne
Magnus(sen) or Elsa Knutsen. Please reply at your convenience if you know of
anything that would help me.
Sincerely, Jennifer

I am researching my husband's ancestry. I have not been able to find anywhere
that has the Sveio bygdeboker. Does anyone know of any place in the US that has
these books?
A great-grandfather (Arent Gabrielson Nilsen Valen) was born in Nov. 5,
1857 in Valvaag and his wife (Gunvor Marie Lear) was born Aug. 29, 1866 in
Tittelsnes. I have some additional information that should help if I can locate
these books.

Hei: Greetings from Germany to
Haugesund
I visited your city 2 weeks ago – it
is a lovely small city – and I had immediately the intention to stay for ever….
It was a wonderful day, warm weather – so we visited liten affären i ga°gaten,
havn, riksmonument and so on. We drank a tasteful coffee in a small bakeri and I
bought a CD from the (local ?) band VAMP.
If I could have the possibility to
work in or near Haugesund so I would move. Should anybody read this statement,
who can offer work to me, he should not hesitate to contact me.
I am 41 years old, studied
mechanical engineer, worked as administrator, at the moment as a sales
representative for laundry services, speak German, English, Russian, little
French and Swedish. Have knowledge in teaching people, are able to work as
involved in a team as alone.
I wish the best for Haugesund and
hope to be there again soon.

Hello,
I was searching for information on the island of Bokn, because
my grandfather and his brothers were supposed to have come from
a fishing village on the island. There were four or five of
them and their name in this country was Buckneberg, supposedly
because they came from the island. Four of them were Lutheran
ministers would settled in Iowa and then in North Dakota. My
grandfather Ingvald founded several of the Lutheran churches

Feb 23: Carisa Larson, Brisbane,
Australia
Hello, My Name is Carisa Larson. I am the daughter of Timothy J Larson of
South Dakota. My father has been doing lots of research into our family
history and has discovered that our surname was once Gismarvik and he has
traced our ancestors back to Norway. I am currently living in Australia and
getting married to an Australian in May. His name is Kelly Hunn also of
Norway, but we are having difficulty find much information about his family.
The only storied that have been told was that a semi-royalty by the name of
Hunn married an English women and lived in some part of England maybe
around Norfolk. Then Charles Hunn (born around 1860) left for Australia on
the Roma (ship) and settled in the Brisbane area of Queensland. We know he
had a son named Fredrick here in Australia, and that he may have had a wife
in England that he left behind. No other information has been
found.
If anyone knows anything about either family, I would love to know
anything even if it may turn out not to be related to our blood
line.
Thank you... I love the website...

My name is Jens Herberg. I visited Utsira back in 1979 following the

risk and determination it must have taken for my Great Grandfather Johan Mikal
Herberg to leave for the wilds of North Dakota. I have had the experience of
standing in the Utsira house he was born in and have stood over his grave in
Halstad, Minnesota. He could only have been a giant. I wish to extend

Hi, I am the
webmaster of the site http://www.arctic-corsair.co.uk The site details a
1960 built side trawler that fished the arctic waters for many
years. In 1978
she spent a time at the shiprepair yard of KARMOY MEK
VERKSTED of KOPERVIK. She was
converted from standard side trawling to pelagic and pair fishing. I am
trying to track down any information on her conversion and any photos at all of
her during the times she visited.

Greetings from Michigan. I have been to Haugesund many times and miss the
fog as it rolls in from the North Sea hiding the fishing boats and red
buoys. I miss the wet cobblestones and the old ladies with felt hats, the
carefree youth on Haraldsgata, and the odd shaped wooden houses on
Bakkeroy. And for all of you Norwegians who take this for granted, come to
the flatlands of mid-Michigan and you'll understand why the west coast of
Norway is so beautiful.

Nov 21: Jostein Johannesen, Vietnam
Halloen igjen !

Ronald Johnson, Marseilles, IL, USA I just acquired my mother's Norwegian bible dated 1918.
I think she may have received it for confirmation when she was 16.
On one of the last pages are the words Kirkegaten 70. I think this
may have been her address in Haugesund. Can someone tell me if there
is a 70 Church Street and if so, is it a residence? If someone
can help me out just reply to this message. I will check out the
guestbook every day. This is a great site. It makes me feel closer
to my mother and our cousins living there and on Karmoy. Thanks

April 03: Elsie Roof, USA Hello My name is Elsie Eliassen Roof. I was
born in Haugesund on Sept. 29, 1921. my family emigrated to
the united states in 1923. We left behind my grandfather Karl
Johan Eliassen and his second wife I think her name was Ingeborg.
They had a son named Karl Erdmann Eliassen. they moved to
Stavanger and I think that is where Bestefar died. We heard
one time from Karl Erdmann and I know he married and had a daughter.
I have been trying to find out if I have any cousins and I don't
know where to go from here. If anyone has any information
or knows how to search for them I would sure appreciate any help
I can get.
