From the 4.15-service
in Rossabø church
Here in Norway Christmas eve is a day off
for many of us. Shops in Haugesund closed at 1PM, and then we started
christmas. This day is actually considered as the main christmas day by
many of us. In the afternoon we go to church before the family gatherings
with the christmas dinner and christmas gifts. We keep on until bedtime.
Many people keep the tradition with reading the gospel of christmasday
before eating the dinner to remind us why we have christmas.
Lets see some pictures from this day
(some archive pictures from christmas
98)
Men
(known as late christmas present buyers) hurrying through the streets.
This
years last christmas tree sale!
At 11AM, they had just finished removing
all the christmas trees for sale. Then a late buyer was helped out!
At
1PM the shops closed.
This goldsmith shop had 1 woman customer,
and 6 men when this picture was shot. This is the day of quick decisions
and expensive gifts.
In the early afternoon, there are christmas day services at institutions
and homes for elderly. This
pictures is from Vardafjell sykehjem 1998.
Rossabø
church at 3P
At 3, many of the churches have their
first service. Many people go to church this day, and it is common in towns
with 2 services, or even 3 some places, to help out everybody wanting to
participate.
After church time families are gathered
in the thousand homes. We start with dinner. The most popular meals for
christmas dinner are:
Ribbe
(Pork Rib)
served with carrot, red cabbage, sprouts,
pork sausage, meatbaals of minced fat and lean pork and potatoes. Many
peoples favourite.
Pinnekjøtt
Wind dried and salted sheep rib. Swelling
in water for a day, and then damp boiled for hours. Delicious, and served
with potatoes and mashed swedes.
Turkey
You all know how that look and taste!
Lutefisk
Some of us use it, but it is not very
common here on Haugalandet!
The gifts
And after dinner, dish washing and a rest,
it's time for the gifts. We
put all of them under the tree (little David experiences his first
christmas), and are gathered in the living room, where we, in different
ways, give each other the gifts. Often one of us is the "father christmas"
reading the labels and handing the gift over.
We keep on until bedtime. For many of us,
this is the real family day.
