After the tragic Sleipner incidence in
Nov. 1999 (16 died) and the unsuccessful
salvage operation in Mars 2000, the wreck lay badly damaged at app.
100 m, just north of the rock Bloksen. Now,
a local salvage company, Eidegruppen from Kvinnherad, has been given the
task to resque the wreck. Even if the commission of inquiry had most of
their answers, one of the 16 diseased is still missed, and some questions
(rafts / construction) can best be answered by examining the wreck.
While the former, and unsuccesful, salvage
operation was done with 60 cm wide straps, cutting themselves into the
fuselage and superstructure, Eidegruppen has made a 120 ton steel platform
that was lowered to 100 m, just behind the wreck. They had difficulties
moving Sleipner because of its severe damages, making is very fragile,
but they succeded. Today (Sunday) they moved the platform with the wreck
submerged to a bank (at app. 30 m) just north east of Lyngholmen. From
here their large 400 Ton floating crane (picture on top) will try to hoist
the wreck, on the platform, to a barge, and transport it to Stord.
