Sleipnerhevingen

Extra!  Thursday Mars 9:
English only: Norwegian information can be found through different news sites.
The Sleipner wreck is back at the bottom of the sea. After days of problems with preparing the salvage operation, they hoised it up to sea level yesterday evening. It was partly over sea level  (picture from TV) for 5 minutes. But the straps used  for hoisting it, almost cut the aluminium fuselage in pieces. They had to lower it to the bottom again to avoid it from falling apart. This morning, the salvage company announced that they have stopped the operation. It is likely to believe that the fuselage will will be left permanently at the bottom.

Comment Mars 22:
There will be another attempt, propably in May.

Nov 3. picture of Sleipner -
illustrating the size of the salvaged bow part that broke off during the incident Nov 26-1999, and made the boat sink so rapidly. It is so large, that it even include parts of the passenger cabin with chairs and front window.

Tirsdagsreportasjen om hevingsforberedelsene
26. November skjedde ulykken ingen hadde trodd kunne skje. En av våre egne, trygge hurtigbåter gikk på et skjær nord på Slettå, og med fatale følger.

I dag heves vraket.

English:
Nov 26 1999 a fatal and very unexpected accident happened, just north of Haugesund. One of our own, safe passenger vessels hit a rock just north of Ryvarden, and many people drowned in the cold water. But many were saved, too!

Tonight the "Sleipner" wreck is about to be rescued. The 30 ton large bow was torn off the boat during the incident, making it sink very fast. It was found on app 100 meters, 300 meters away from the rest of the boat. Tonight the deep sea divers have succeded in securing the wreck with straps, and it was almost ready to start raising it when we had to leave because the sun went down. As we write this text (at 8PM), the operation is planned to be started. (* Wednesday morning at 9A: The rescuing operation is still delayed because of problems with securing the wreck before hoisting it from the bottom at 99 m.)

When the wreck has been raised to sea level, the water inside it will be removed by pouring it out (they plan to raise the back part of the boat a bit), before it is planned to be put on the deck of the supply ship "Viking surveyor". The bow we can see (white) on the deck of the rescuing plattform  "Regalia".

On the picture on top of this page, you can see the "Storebloksen" rock that "Sleipner" hit on that fatal afternoon of Nov 26. (between the coastguard vessel and the platform).

Today's pictures were shot at app 6PM
