Jazz
and ships - and heat
Last
issue told you about how cold this summer
was - so far. When writing this we are almost
back to the cooling times, but until last
week we have had it as warm as we are able
to cope with. Temps over 30C is not what
we are made for here at the windy coastline
of Norway.
Sildajazz:
The
picture on top of today's page is from the
Sildajazz street parade. We like to call
it the worlds largest, and todays reports
say 40-50.000 people in the streets. I was
there, and I think a little less than that
is the truth, but as long as none of us
has counted, and as long as the whole, long
Haraldsgaten was crowded, I am sure
there were thousands watching
and enjoying.
The
Sildajazz, the biggest tradjazz festival
in Norway, was 18 this year. According to
the manager and jazz festival general,
Gunnar Jæger, this one was better then ever.
App. 60 orcestras (Indre
Åmøyen) and 300 norwegian and international
musicians performed through app. 180 conserts
through Wednesday afternoon to Saturday
evening, in restaurants, pubs, churches
and consert halls.
Many
people go to conserts, but many just visit
the Inner quay where jazz sounds out of
every bar window and ship deck. And
in Smedasund, hundreds of small boats
are staying and passing
all the time.
From
next year on, Bjarne
Dankel jr, until now consert hall leader
in Festiviteten, Haugesund, will take over
as the manager of the Sildajazz festival.
This
morning (Monday Aug 16), only the markers
in the sea remind us of how many small boats
we had as visitors during this years Sildajazz.
In a day or to, even they are removed.
But
- August is only half gone so far. Next
weekend we have the wooden boat festival
and the International film festival. Not
to forget the Worlds longest Herring buffet
- in our main street Haraldsgaten (this
Saturday) And in 1,5 week, we celebrate
our 150 year birthday - on August 26. And
then the fashion festival - and the Miss
Norway competition - and the Amanada women
festival - and . . . . . Haugesund
is the centre of events in August.
Kaia,
one of the oldest ships still in use
According
to the listing at the web site "ohoi.no",
the hen tail vessel "Kaia", built
1845 (or 50?), is one of the very oldest
ships in the world still to be in use. After
a large restoration job financed by the
Directorate of cultural heritage of Norway,
she gets the final touch done on Kortanes
in Haugesund, her home town.
Tallship
race 2004
Haugesund
has not been the choise yet for the Tall
ship race (Former Cutty Sark tall ship race).
Our neighbour town Stavanger, however, had
them as their visitors last week. Tuesday
August 10. they sailed on, and had their
start area just south of Skudeneshavn on
Karmøy. I was on Bokn island, and managed
to shoot a distant picture. Here is Tallship
Race - seen from haugalandet.
I
end this issue with an evening shot from
our viewpoint Steinsfjellet, showing the
Slettå ocean, the Kvalen area and a couple
of ships passing as the sun is close to
end the day. Here
it is!
