JUNI-UTSIKT

Glimpses from the Haugesund area in June 2003

Sorry to have been gone so long. For those of you not aware of it, this site is a "one man show", but with many friends and supporters. I have had some rough months this spring, as my mother became sick - and passed away late May.  Simultaneously job projects were pushed ahead of me. June was needed to get back on track, finishing projects - and waiting for my Web production PC to come back from service.

Earlier today I got the phone I have been waiting for: Your PC is back! And here I am with some glimpses of June 2003:

Rain

My Smedasundet Web Cam and weather forecast service has been continuosely running through June, keeping visitors updated. And if your are one of the Web Cam visitors, your are aware of all the rain we have had. But June is June, and the tourists keep coming in their smaller or bigger pleasure boats. Click this link to see a rainy picture of a sail based vessel, using its engine due to the lack of wind.

The rain and sun combination makes plants and trees grow faster than usual. This shot show you one of the very green (and may be a bit to large)  trees in our main street Haraldsgaten.

Note: The last week now has been beautiful, sunny and warm. It does not always rain. Come - and experience the changes we can offer. Haugesund summer is exiting - fresh - and  . . . . .

Rainy days give us beautiful sunsets

This link give you access to another beautiful sunset view. It is shot from Steinsfjellet, just 10 min. drive from the very city center of Haugesund. As Haugesund is situated by the oceanside towards west, we have many of these sunsets. Even on rainy days the sun may give us a glimps. Come and see them for yourself!

Airport surroundings

I have been walking a lot in the Haugesund airport areas this last week. I even was allowed to enter the northern runway area, and shot a couple of pictures. One of them, a bit to grainy, show you the Torvastad church and the bay between the Helganes (airport) area and Torvastad. The other one that I present today show us stoney shores and isles, just west of the airport.

The work to prepare the work with increasing the runway from 1600 to 2000 meters has started, as you may see all behind on this "tricky" photo, shot southwards from north of the runway.

Come to Haugesund and Haugalandet

Be aware of the possiblities: You can go to Haugesund by plane from London (Stansted), Oslo, Bergen Sandefjord and Aberdeen. Or you can come by car or bus or boat. We even have direct car ferry connections to and from Newcastle (England) and Hanstholm, Denmark. People love our wind and rough surroundings. Try it!

The Norwegian Maritime directorate will be moved to Haugesund

The Norwegian parliament made this important decision some weeks ago. This site plans to keep you informed about the development in this important case. Haugesund is already an important maritime town, known world wide. And, even if we don't build ships anymore, our shipyard has large ship docks and facilities for maintaning projects.

Sleipner - the rock it hit

For those of you remembering the Sleipner tragedy in November 1999 (followed up by this site), this shot of the rock Storecalls on memories. The lighting steel based tower is a result of the Sleiner incident, and has been there for a couple of years now. The pictures was shot through a wet window on the Flaggrute vessel VIngtor as I passed earlier this week on my way to Bergen. On the return trip, we used the sister ship of Sleipner, called Draupner.

If you want to know more about the Sleipner Incident, check this link.

This is all for today. Hope to be able to keep you informed on a more regular basis after the summer holiday ( From August on ).

PS:  Holiday time

By the way: Me, my wife Anne and some friend plan to stay a week in New York late July. May be I'll bring you some photo impressions fom the Big Apple, too!
