As I pass by, March 09

The large Steinmeyer organ in the central Our Saviours church in Haugesund is beeing removed. It was built in 1955, based on electro phneumatic technology that has become to expensive to maintaine in a high cost country, and has now been donated to Poland, where organbuilders will repair the parts and rebuild it in a catedral large enough for it.

Sunday March 2. it was used for the last time (picture above, shot just as the last hymn starts). 3 days later, the polish workers have already removed all pipes, including the childrens favourite: The cymbelstar. They plan to keep on working for until next weekend. Then the whole construction shall be removed.

The organ consist of almost 3000 pipes. The benches of the church has come handy as a place to sort them before packing.

Until next January, when the new Verscueren organ ( Holland) is ready for use, a small organ in the front of the church, will be the instrument in use. The dutch organ builders will start mounting the new instrument in September. Before that, the wall behind and other parts of the original organ gallery will be rebuilt as true to the architects drawings as possible.

I was participating as an organist, playing most of the service. Njål Steinsland, the permanent organist in the church, played the Postlude and finished an almost 50 year long service by the fine, but worn Steinmeyer organ.

The harbour packhouse has soon been removed

This week another construction from the early fifties, the large harbor packhouse, has been removed almost totally. This will give necessary space for a new car waiting and control area when we get the new Denmark ferry April 3.

On the Haugesund airport on Karmøy (Helganes)

a lot of hard work is going on to remove some hills and rocks around the southern part of the airport. This is to fullfill the obligations to Ryanair when they start off April 30. Hopefully the work with the extra 400 m. runway will start shortly, too.

When visiting the Garpaskjer quay area,

a sail boat rushed by on its way northwards today. It gave me summerly feelings, even if the rain and wind felt different from what we expect when seeing this kind of views.
